A recurring theme in my recent posts has been the extent to which conservatives live in a fantasy world of their own invention which bears little empirical resemblance to the actually existing world. Here’s a stunning example: a reference to ‘one of the more left-wing of the London Spectator’s contributors’.

The idea that any version of the Spectator would give space to a true left-leaning writer is preposterous. Presumably it’s all part of the ‘liberal media’ myth they nurture so carefully, where Fox News is the only balanced news organisation on the planet and everything else is engaged in a crusade to introduce socialism and sharia law to the USA. It’s one more straw in the wind demonstrating how the wildly unhinged ravings of extremists have come to constitute the serious mainstream discourse of the right.
