Hence the left hand for cleaning, the right hand for eating. Indeed, washing with water is considered clean, whereas using paper is considered dirty. From my own experience, you are also far less likely to suffer from haemorrhoids and other irritations from the failure to clean properly. The French with their bidets are on the right track as well.
